This residency will be an open laboratory set up in Sign, Groningen. During 5 weeks we will develop an installation. The installation consists solely of a computer and a printer. On the computer we place several models of ecosystems, inhabited by different self sustaining processes. The ecosystems are interconnected and influence each other, spreading population types and viruses from one to the other. The computer functions like it usually does, as a black box theatre of processes that we cannot enter. The only output comes through the printer, giving us clues about the activity inside with a mixture of statistics, ASCII art, and system messages.
While all the code and processes are running as a white box (GPL code on GNU/Linux environment), the audience remains in the shadow side of this Wayang Kulit theatre.
In this installation it is all about the processes and their life on the machine. A lot of effort will go into creating these processes, their complexity, interactions, evolution and sustainability. Instead of putting most of the energy into visualisation and interface design, this installation is a closed world with very minimal output to its audience. It contains much more life than any previous work.
Next to the artistic research that will go on, there will be a workshop, the kick off of Openlab Groningen, a lecture evening and to finish the project, a final presentation.
